Erreur fatale\u00a0! Vous avez tort\u00a0! Dans une phrase en anglais, tous les mots n'ont pas la m\u00eame valeur. Rappelez-vous bien que, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence du fran\u00e7ais, l'anglais parl\u00e9 suit un <strong>rythme morse<\/strong>, compos\u00e9 de sons longs et de sons courts. Le fran\u00e7ais parl\u00e9 suit un rythme de mitraillette, o\u00f9 toutes les syllabes ont \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s la m\u00eame dur\u00e9e. <strong>Pour bien parler l'anglais, il faut oublier ce rythme de mitraillette et adopter le rythme morse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vous aurez beau \u00e9noncer la plus belle phrase qui soit en anglais \u2013 si vous la prononcez en utilisant un rythme \u00ab fran\u00e7ais \u00bb, tous vos efforts seront en vain. <strong>Accentuer chaque mot dans une phrase vous donnera un air de robot.<\/strong> Soit votre interlocuteur ne vous comprendra pas du tout, soit il sera oblig\u00e9 de bien tendre l'oreille pour d\u00e9chiffrer votre belle phrase. <em>Un peu dommage, non\u00a0?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Voici l'exemple que nous avons utilis\u00e9 dans un article pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. \u00c9coutez cette phrase en anglais mais accentu\u00e9e \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"STRESS-MILK-CHOCOLATE-FRENCHRHYTHM\"><span lang=\"en\">Milk chocolate is made of thirty percent of cocoa.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Et maintenant avec le bon rythme anglais : <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"STRESS-MILK-CHOCOLATE-ENGLISH-NORMAL\"><span lang=\"en\">Milk chocolate is made of thirty percent of cocoa.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<!-- WOULDDO: re-record with \"Milk chocolate is made up of thirty percent cocoa.\" ? And better audio. -->\n<p>Ou plus flagrant encore :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"SENTENCESTRESS-TOWN-FRENCHRHYTHM\"><span lang=\"en\">Can you get something for me in town while you're there?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Et avec le rythme anglais :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"SENTENCESTRESS-TOWN-NORMAL\"><span lang=\"en\">Can you get something for me in town while you're there?<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Vous entendez bien la diff\u00e9rence, non\u00a0?<\/em> Bien, dans chaque cas, il faut imiter la prononciation du second exemple. <\/p>\n<p><em>Que faire donc pour \u00e9viter une situation pour le moins embarrassante\u00a0?<\/em> <strong>Pour reproduire cette musicalit\u00e9 anglaise, il faut accentuer certains mots et ne pas en accentuer d'autres.<\/strong> <em>Piece of cake\u00a0!<\/em> <strong>On accentue les mots lexicaux (<em>content words<\/em>) et on n'accentue pas les mots-outils (<em>function words<\/em>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9\u00e9coutez la deuxi\u00e8me phrase (celle avec le rythme anglais) et notez qu'il n'y que certains mots qui sont mis en relief. Quant aux <strong><em>function words<\/em>, ils agissent comme du ciment.<\/strong> Ils relient la phrase, mais \u00e0 l'oral, on les per\u00e7oit \u00e0 peine. Ceux-ci sont n\u00e9cessaires pour la <a href=\"\/blog\/rubriques\/grammaire-anglaise\/\">grammaire<\/a> mais ils ne sont pas accentu\u00e9s quand vous parlez.<\/p>\n<p>Un exemple :<\/p>\n<p>Imaginez que vous discutez avec quelqu'un dans une soir\u00e9e o\u00f9 il y a beaucoup de bruit de fond. De la part de votre interlocuteur, vous n'entendez que les mots suivants : <span lang=\"en\">LIKE<\/span> \u2013 <span lang=\"en\">GLASS<\/span> \u2013 <span lang=\"en\">BEST<\/span> \u2013 <span lang=\"en\">CHAMPAGNE<\/span>. \u00c0 votre place je lui r\u00e9pondrais par un \u00ab oui \u00bb car on vient de vous proposer une coupe de champagne\u00a0! Autrement dit, en tant qu'auditeur, il suffit de bien entendre ces cinq mots-l\u00e0 pour comprendre le message que me transmet mon interlocuteur. Les sept autres mots dans la phrase 7 sont importants d'un point de vue grammatical, mais ils ne sont pas essentiels \u00e0 la compr\u00e9hension. Les <em>content words<\/em> sont <strong>en gras<\/strong> ; les mots en <strong>MAJUSCULES<\/strong> correspondent au dernier mot, qu'on accentue le plus (le son est plus long et plus fort). Parfois, il sera n\u00e9cessaire d'accentuer un <em>function word<\/em> parce que celui-ci est le mot le plus important pour donner du sens \u00e0 votre message (pour toutes les raisons \u00e9voqu\u00e9es dans la section pr\u00e9c\u00e9dente, surtout pour contraster le <em>function word<\/em> en question avec un autre mot), ou parce que celui-ci se trouve en fin de phrase. <\/p>\n<p>En gros, \u00e7a veut dire que la syllabe (ou une des syllabes si c'est un mot polysyllabique) du <em>function word<\/em> important sera accentu\u00e9e. Par exemple :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"SENTENCESTRESS-DRINK-EXAMPLE\"><span lang=\"en\">A) She doesn't smoke or drink.<\/span><\/a> \u2013 Accentuation normale; <span lang=\"en\">she<\/span> non-accentu\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><a lang=\"en\" data-phonograph=\"SENTENCESTRESS-DRINK-RESPONSE-EXAMPLE\"><span lang=\"en\">B) At least that's what SHE told you.<\/span><\/a> \u2013 <span lang=\"en\">She<\/span> accentu\u00e9; on insiste sur le fait qu'elle vous ment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dans la premi\u00e8re phrase, la syllabe, non-accentu\u00e9e, de \u00ab she \u00bb est prononc\u00e9e <span lang=\"fonipa\">&#47;\u0283i&#47;<\/span> ; dans la deuxi\u00e8me phrase, o\u00f9 l'on veut sugg\u00e9rer qu'elle vous ment, on accentue la syllabe de \u00ab she \u00bb, qui sera prononc\u00e9 <span lang=\"fonipa\">&#47;\u0283i\u02d0&#47;<\/span>. En anglais, <strong>on parle de <em>weak form<\/em> (forme faible) si le mot n'est pas accentu\u00e9 et de <em>strong form<\/em> (forme forte) si, au contraire, celui-ci est accentu\u00e9.<\/strong> Voici quelques exemples o\u00f9 un <em>function word<\/em>, d'ordinaire non-accentu\u00e9, est mis en relief.
